Thank klipper I hope this takes off.

What about breaking up the effects part into chunky and planar ? So you have hardware effects Copper+Blitter and CPU effects ? Just an idea.

I will add an article on RGB plasma when I get time.

winden: excellent...I've wikified it a bit and added it to the categories. for articles like this it would be nice to have the LaTeX which converts the formulas in articles to nice mathematical symbols, but I don't have this installed on the wiki yet. If you have anymore cool articles from Trashcan...feel free to add 'em...I'll help out with formatting!

krabob: OS-demo-wiki me beautiful! :-)

toffeman: well, the article/tutorial links section is completely open. if you want to create a "chunky Effects" subheading under the Effects section that's already, there you're welcome to do so. An RGB Plasma tut would be keeewl...

hmm, I'm going to write a short step-by-step guid thing explaining all the main things you need to know to add an article. All the formatting and that massive MediaWiki formatting doc can be a bit daunting.

Ok, I've just added a small but practical fixed point arithmetic article. Enjoy!

Is the ACA wiki still around or has it silently been killed?
The link leads to a page with only a map 4sale01.
(and the c64 and amycoders wiki link also doesn't seem to work anymore either)

Last times I looked there were a few good articles on it (seem to remember articles about floating point math with integers and tunnel effects?), so it would be a shame if they were lost. Does someone have a copy of the articles?
I run amigacoding.com since october 2007, so if the authors of the articles don't mind they could be hosted there.

spell: it came, it went and it is indeed dead. :)

The SQL article records are still up as far i know, so I should be able to copy the text into your wiki, or ill mail to you. I'll do that one day this week. (along with details on authors, for permission purposes)

That would be great :)

If you can still access the mediawiki you can copy the article by hand or by doing an export of articles to XML. There also is a script dumpBackup.php which dumps all wiki pages from mediawiki to XML (only pages, not stuff like user accounts). I'm not sure if dumpBackup.php runs standalone or need mediawiki to be in working order.

If you only have the database you could either reinstall mediawiki and reuse the database, mail me the database or rip the pages from the database yourself from the page and revision table.

The ACA wiki had had a template for article credits (with original author and where it appeared before I think), which would probably be useful for the AmigaCoding WIKI too.

Spellcoder: Try the wayback machine. The wiki got archived in December 2007. I am not sure if it contains everything, but it looks alright and features at least some tutorials on water and tunnel effects.

http://membres.lycos.fr/amycoders/

Has some good info. Seems the page is a bit broken but it should be doable to grab the info anyway

Hm yeah, handing over responsibility of the #amycoders page did not help making it thrive again :/ I still have backups and could also help to transform the material into a wiki style format. I would prefer some semi serious set up though (not "I just installed dokiwiki on the linux machine in my dorm...")

Yeah Amycoders site was so good, we need that kind of stuff. It is really diffcult to find good web sites about programming Amiga. there are several pages about 68k, but not for demo coders, no algorithms, no copper etc. just 68k.
I really would like to see a wiki about Amiga coding. games, magz sections etc. are all ok, but *there should be* a coding section.

well, I think we have a pretty cool basis for an Amiga coding wiki now. It's here: http://www.amigacoding.com .

Go support it with coding tutorials! :)

i don't want to offend anyone, but compared to www.codebase64.com, amigacoding.com is more like a portal with some random links rather than a structured wiki with quality usersubmitted content/articles that would provide a good entry-point for newbie amiga demo coders..

Forgive me if I am wrong, but it seems like what you are really trying to say is that somebody should provide you with all the information that you need so you don't have to figure it out for yourself. I wouldn't agree with that underlying assumption, if that was the case.

i am saying that a structured framework which encourages people to write articles for the benefit of the whole scene is needed (if we would like to see a growth of coders on the amigascene that is).
i do think that coderbase64 provides such a framework, and i think the 64scene benefits from it quite much.. also, documenting amiga hardware effects would have some historical value as well if it's not going to be some kind of "lost art". i also think that this was the original intention of this thread.

also, the assumption that newbie amiga coders should figure out all hw-tricks that are known to the scene but is not documented properly, by themselves is just some kind of re-inventing the wheel philosophy which i thought was kinda played out these days..

why i posted to this thread in the first case was too see if anyone was working on this or if the project was dead.. if it is dead i would put some effort in reviving it :)

Old democoders are experts in reversed engeneering. Our wiki is in the demos we produce. Open your dissasembler and enlightend your mind.

sp_: great advice! but why do you post your routines here then? wouldn't they fit better inside a release for the newcomers to disassemble and learn from?

I quit making demos decades ago.

Somebody is paying old coders alot of money to use their skills, but they are not good enough.
Demos are not important. Assembly coders are obsolete.. Creating magic is done in hardware, not in software....

My God...SoLo!? :)

But seriously, yolk, the particular wiki-project which this thread originally referred to is definitely dead. So feel free to launch another similar project if you feel you're man enough for the challenge. I certainly wasn't! :)

Hi Winden, I was looking for this article as reference and the links appear dead. Do you have a copy of it knocking about anywhere?
