Oohh, I've been away for far too long... ...but at last, Datastorm and recent events seems to have pulled me back on track again. :) Much to say, many people to thank..

So best to start with a HI perhaps! ("again" hehe)

It's great to see that the Amiga scene is much more alive than I was aware of before I started looking around a some month ago! Inspiring indeed.. :P

PS. You'll find my 3mail-addy at p0u3t net for any strange urge to contact me ;)

I'll copy paste what i wrote in the datastorm thread:

Welcome Raylight!

Cool to see an ex amiga coder finding interest in demos again. I assume you were behind demos like Repugnance and Enforcing the Law (which i need to add to the ada website some day for sure)?

Maybe one day you'll find motivation to code a new Powerline production again :)

Also, be sure to check out the demos released after 1998 up until now. The quantity may have reduced over the years, but not the quality (although i realise not everyone agrees on that :))

Hehe, was writing a reply unaware of that you moved your post. :) Would have looked quite funny if I posted a reply there! Pasting it as is here:

Thanks z5!

Before anything: I have to say I'm impressed, glad and thankful for what has to be a enormous task to keep ADA alive. With "keep alive" being a huge understatement! ;) Kudos! I read a worrying thread here about the future of ADA, I hope that some solution has emerged (?)

Yeah, I'm behind most of the code for those two, certainly when it comes to the effects. What drove (and still does) me was the desire to create things that hadn't been seen before, doing the seemingly impossible. :) I will always enjoy a demo containing at least one thing that baffles me; the that jaw-dropping feeling of "how the #?! did they do that?". (That said, I enjoy a lot of demos for various other reasons of course!)

Funny you should mention it. With all the heart-warming comments on those 2 demos here and elsewhere, I was wondering why Enforcing the Law wasn't on the ADA website :D, and figured I should suggest it - after working out who's who, how ADA works and so on :)

And yeah, I'm motivated! But then there's that thing some call "life" too.. ;)

@Corial

Thanks! And that's really inspiring to hear :) I wonder though how a Powerline demo would turn out today, demos have evolved so much since 1997!

@z5

Will check out more demos :) Have been watching lots of them, although unfortunately mostly as video. Hard to know how they perform on the real thing.

Anyway, I'd mostly agree on that. :P Feels like innovation is back again!! I remember a period when whole demos felt like "just a 3D-engine" with different scenes all the way. Luckily that seems to be the past, and now I see all kinds of interesting things in more recent demos! :)
(The one thing that I'm not too fond of is the hardware requirements today. I believe way too few have a 060/64MB lying around. I for one haven't! (yet))

Welcome to ADA, and hold on to that motivation - a new Powerline demo would be great for the scene!

When it comes to obtaining a 1260-board, there is a site called amibay which is probably the biggest trading place for amiga hardware at the moment. Also keep an eye on different international ebay sites (especially Germany and UK) where such boards pop up occasionally.

Welcome! Just want to say I am glad you are interested in comeback ;o) I always liked your demo style (energy, speed, effects, ideas, music), Amiga demos started to be quite serious then, nowdays I miss that fun and energy like you have in Repugnance and Enforcing the law.

Recently I did my own top 20 of Amiga demos for our Amiga party, your Enforcing the law is in that list (15th) ;o)

yo Raylight! Powerline return sounds cool. Pls remember that a better term than Revision 2012 to release anything for the Amiga (even some small intro) this year will not be :) Maybe this can help you a bit to start coding again: http://ada.untergrund.net/forum/index.php?action=v thread&forum=4&topic=666

/me surprised and overwhelmed by you guys, thanks! :) Getting that Amiga scene feeling again. Philosophical side note: You know, the more I think about it; the scene was (and is as it seems! :) ) as much about good ethics, ideals and helping out, as actual competition and creativity.

@dalton

Thanks, and a shame I didn't get to chat with you at DS12! Or maybe we did, briefly? All beer and no sleep for 50h makes things very blurry hehehe... Oh well.. scnepilz soon perhaps? :) Thanks for your tips on getting hold of a 1260. Looks like I'll soon have an Apollo 060 card thanks to Skope. He actually *donated* it.. wow! That's just so.. well can't find the words! :))) I now owe at least one person a cool release, that's for sure!! :P I do need to get hold of an old Phase5 1260/50/16Mb though, i.e. the hardware The Law and stuff were optimized for to get a baseline.

Btw, I had lots in mind (good, bad, the future of the scene etc) with my comment about 060 but didn't feel like writing a novel about it here hehe. :D

@jack_3d

15th!?! Bah! That's even worse than our place in the compo! ;D

Hehe... Anyway, that's amazing to hear! We put a lot of effort into that one, and unfortunately it became terrible rushed in the end. It was intended to be twice as long, with a second part taking over instead of that abrupt dead-line-in-2-minutes-ending. :) I like your description of our "style" btw! It pretty much sums up how we wanted our demos to be. (As I remember it that is.)

@slayer

Hehe, thanks, I've been downloading that one since I found it. :) Yeah, so I've heard, though I'd have to put all time I have to finish something until then... hmm.. If to release anything remotely serious that is.. ;) Btw, looking at releases on ADA, I find two "Slayer".. ?

@all - I see I have some catching up to do! Interestingly, several of the demos/intros that made me feel "Hey, there IS hope for the scene after all, maybe it's time.." where made by the very you who have welcomed me here! Me put feedback soon :)

Welcome back Raylight!

It was very nice talking to you at DATASTORM. Too bad I didn't realize who you were until it was packing time. I did walk by some time during Saturday and saw you discussing your (vaguely familiar) smoke effect with some other guys.

Anyway, I found your ideas about effect optimization (the planar computation trick in particular) very interesting, so I'm looking forward to seeing what wizardry you will be conjuring up as you get up to speed. :-D

Hej Blueberry!

Thanx and LOL! Soooo funny, I got that feeling. And I didn't realize who you where either until afterwards!! :) I wonder how comprehensible I where though, not having slept since forever.. ;)

I've been meaning to mail you somehow but haven't found the time yet. We had some really interesting discussions, which became even more intreresting as I started trying to unfold forgotten history, memories from the past started to emerge and more. :))) Yes, that concept is actually interesting, isn't it?! :P It seems to get more and more so the more I've been exploring it. Pen-and-paper-style that is. :-D

Hmm, obviously my mind were hazy and sleepwalking, but I have been under the impression (= in hindsight blurred guessing lol) that I was discussing and looking at source code from that effect with you, no?

It was with some really bright coder(s) at the least... ....Hmmmm.. ...oooohhhnoo.. a little TOO bright perhaps hehehe! ;-D

A bit late to the party here but still. Apathy might be the most watched demo of all time for me, together with various Rage productions. That zoomrot in Apathy still baffles me. And the soundtrack really tie the demo together.

Meeting you and Wasp at Datastorm was really nice and I hope to see you again in the future.

..and here's a bit later! :D Thanks!!! Truly surprised and warmed by your feedback about Apathy! :)) I was probably too drunk and sleep-deprived but I have a strange memory of a cassette tape and beer in our talk about Apathy?! :P It was cool to see it again after finally restoring my Amiga at DS12, considering I seen it on real hardware for over a decade. Btw, looking at that zoomrot today I really wonder that I was bragging about, maybe time to look at source code - or potential bragging tendencies ;-) I do like the smooth "step free" motion though..

Oh, while I'm at it. Refering to our discussion at DS13 about jobs and programmers these days - still looking for "real" coders? If so, I might have one. I just need to find your business card which lies here somewhere... at that typical "smart" place you're certain is great for not needing to search your whole place to find it.. ;)
