Note: I'm not saying that "not going for the 1st prize" isn't serious (or cool!), there's not even a connection there. Cool stuff can be simple, "difficult" stuff can be uninteresting, etcetcetc...
*But* if you know that the stuff you're working on is very simple from a technical perspective then you should absolutely try to add *something* to make your release more interesting than the millions of scrollers, dotcubes and tunnels we've seen before.

Perhaps I release something on Solskogen. Will bring my Natami prototype and a amiga600. 1mb chip. I have some effects. Need to create a object generator, and other borring stuff. My demo will look like codercolors without timings and the finishing touches. I miss the design and the coolness of f.ex. Norwegian Kindness and We are lucy. That is why I don't release anything. having a fast poligon stream running on the screen is not enough. You need somebody with artistic skills as well.

Well, between the first half of 2004 (Hog and Dance Extravaganza) and Norwegian Kindness in 2011 I didn't release any proper demos at all (only 1-day partyhacks with recycled code and blurfucked anims), so I'd rather say that "I started coding again" (rather than "did something to improve the quality"...).
I think NK followed on quite nicely from where Dark Helmets and Hog left off, but obviously: the 4 years of full-time work coding 2004-2008 probably helped a bit, even though none of that was 68k/amiga-related. :)

And of course: not working around the clock (and the world) provided a bit more time to experiment with new ideas.

He claims to be. We'll believe him when the demo is out! ;)
