A bit off topic, but anyway... I'm getting a new pc so i will have a lot of catching up to do on the pc demoscene.
I would like to buy a LCD TFT monitor instead of CRT. I'm looking at the Viewsonic 171, which has a response time of 8ms, has a bunch of positive reviews and is even recommended for games.
But what i'm wondering: how will demos look on a LCD TFT monitor? Anyone has experience with this? What can i expect from different resolutions and fast moving demos?
z5_: first I have to say that I'm not an expert. I don't actually follow scene demos a lot (especially on the pc) but today's LCD display are quite fast, suitable for gaming for example. I'm sure that demos are ok.
8ms?? That sounds like fast ;) Mine has, maybe 16ms...don't remember :)
If resolutions change during the demo, that might be a slight problem. Here it takes some time to "resync".
I have Acer AL1714 - today 19" models are cheaper than this was 6 months ago :/
Hmm...speaking of LCD's and games...Im kinda into the FPS 3D game Counterstrike, and are about to buy a new PC setup....
Ive tried to play CS on LCDs before but i really hated it...details was quite smeared/cloudy...And when i compared it to the CRT screens...it was no contest....
But...What kinda speed/spec's should i look for to get a decent 3D shooter performance from a LCD monitor?
@Overflow:
Having read quite a bit about LCD monitors lately, i think you definately should have a look at Viewsonic, and in particular the 171(b/s) or 191 (19 inch version). With an 8ms response time, various tests indicate that this should be a very good monitor for games (and for everything else really). Quite expensive but seems to be worth the money.
And by the way, i ordered mine yesterday. With a bit of luck, i can share my experiences about it in a week or so. Mind you, i don't play much FPS games.
Well, i can answer my own question now. I bought a 191s from Viewsonic and having tested it a bit saturday, i must say that i am impressed.
So far i haven't noticed anything "strange". It performs really well. Still have to test movies and games so i'll report back in a couple of days. Demowise, it's spot on.
