Its been a good party.. 7 demos, 4 64k intros (although two of those were only entered to save the compo), and 5 4k intros.

Somehow i was quite dissapointed. Maybe i got my hopes up too high after last year?

Comments on Pouet hinted for big things to come in the 4k compo so i was hoping for 4k's from Ephidrena, RNO (Britelite), Spaceballs maybe and Kufa. I must have misread or read too much into things. Still, Lvis and Noxie were good, so kind of the same as last year (Ikanim and Tribute to Acid).

The 64k intro competition isn't what it used to be. With Potion leaving, and Loonies and Nature not doing any 64k's anymore, it has become the weakest competition with only two serious releases (MI 05 and Dream 2). Just like last year aswell. The other two intros were released to actually have a compo, it seems.

The biggest dissapointment for me was the demo competition. Last year had at least 8 really great demos. No Uprough, no Tulou demo (was curious to see how you guys progressed since last year's demo), no IRIS demo (and no new Dr.Doom demo based on his new demo-engine, which would have kicked ass), no Creative Minds, Spaceballs, Mankind, El Crew, Traktor.

And the worst of all, no Ephidrena release. Sniff...boehoehoe... I was soooo looking forward to what Eph would come up with this time. Finnmark and Respirator Stories proved that Eph was on the roll again...

I've been looking forward to Breakpoint releases for a whole bloody year...

ok, i know... i'm the easy one to talk as i have never contributed with anything ever. So i'll shut up :)

Well, the party itself was really really good. Lots of Amiga sceners to talk to, and almost a whole row of real Amigas in one corner, thanks to the tulou and funktion guys... it was nice to be able to stand somewhere and not be surrounded by laptops and PCs ;-)

You were right about two 64ks being released just to save the compo, but not quite right about which ones ;-)

Stingray had been working on Dream 2, but wasn't sure if he would release it. When it came to the deadline, he decided not to since he thought it was "pure crap" (his words, not mine). He said that he had no time to give it any real design, and a lot of the effects just weren't up to his required standard, so he didn't enter it.

About an hour and a half before the compo, Britelite came to where Dr. Doom and I were sat, and asked if we could make a 64k intro because there were only two entries (his and depths), and the compo would be cancelled. I initially went to see if the Tulou guys could do anything, but I couldn't find them. Later I was talking to Dr. Doom outside and we decided to just code something really fast to save the compo. The result was "Scotch Egg". We didn't put our real names on it because... ueeehhh... it was only one effect and a scroller. It turns out Stingray found out about the two entries too, and entered his 64k anyway.

Ephidrena were going to release a demo, but Loaderror was too tired and they didn't finish it in time. I don't know if they plan to release it at another party or save it until BP06...

As for Evil, well, mostly coders appreciate it I guess. But then, I guess most people don't appreciate how hard it is to get two full pictures in a 4k intro, with some other effects and a sound of "pure evil" ;-) Each picture is 320x200, so two of them are 125Kb. Also the sound, if left on (as I was originally going to) doesn't loop for several hours and changes subtly throughout that time, but it just fit the design better to leave it on the tone. I understand if people think it sucks, but personally, I think we did an OK job of translating a design theme into 4kB.

The "xeron & doom" demo was a non-serious 3 day production, just for fun, since we finished the 4kB earlier than expected.

Oh yes, and be thankful the 64kb compo was saved... if Stingray finishes the one he's already started work on for next year, it will blow you away. Really ;-)

Oh yes, and also his 96K conversion of "Lotus Turbo Esprit Challenge", including all 33 levels and all gameplay modes is just so awesome it hurts !

@Xeron:

Thanks for the update. In any case, didn't want to sound as an unthankful git... just wrote down what i felt really. I have the utmost respect for all demo teams still active on Amiga.

Btw. is it true that Madwizards released a demo? Can't find it anywhere...

They did, although they couldn't get it to run on the compo machine, so they ran it on the Pegasos instead, which was quite unfair since the pegasos is 50x faster and NOT listed on the competition rules page... but still, it was an OK demo, they have done better in the past.

Probably best party ever, I completely agree with xeron on everything except the food (how can you not like marmite =)).

I think the releases was great, some groups didn't manage to finish their stuff so hopefully we will have a few nice demos out there in a few months time. What also was so good about the party was that all groups I talked to was realy positive about the future, the amiga scene felt anything but dead.

@z5
Tulou demo, I came back from travelling 3 weeks before the party and moved to a new town straight away so I didn't have any amiga until I came to the party hall. Therefore we decided to skip trying to get a demo togheter and instead we released our first 4k (first pseudo-proper one atleast). It was fun making a 4k so there might be more coming.

About the standard of the 64k compo, a few years ago 64k was the big important compo of the two intro compos. Now people seem to have moved over to 4k while the 64k gets less attention.

Well, the Amiga demos at BP this year weren't THAT bad. You cannot expect so much after so many hammer demos came out last year! But yes, it was sad some people weren't even present and others didn't manage to finish their work.

@ kas1e: I think you make your mouth a bit too full. I'd suggest you first produce a good intro or demo on your own and then condemn what others have done previously. At least that's my humble opinion.
