Hi,

I am going to give a talk about the demo scene for a research group in Computer Graphics in two weeks. It's quite an informal thing so I plan to talk a lot about social and historical aspects of the scene. Sadly I do not have an Amiga anymore so I will have to show all demos as videos. I think I will have about 1-2h time for the talk, so I thought I would ask here what demos people think I should show. As I only really have a clue about the Amiga scene it would be interesting to get suggestions of demos on other platforms, however remember the constraint that there has to be videos available.

I once gave a 90 mins lecture on the history of cracktros to a group of media computing students. The talk was about the development from the most basic C64 cracktros, over the Amiga on to the late PC intros. I could give you my notes and playlist if you like.

definetely some GBA stuff f.e. by the Shitfaced Clowns.
For coder pr0n on PC I'd like to recommend 47'111.0 by Faktory...
realtime caustics *fap*, smokeboxes and one hell of a soundtrack...video version is available on pouet, too.
On the C=64 I very much like Deus Ex Machina by Oxyron & Crest

I compiled some of my favourites on my YouTube channel.

Most notably from my point of view:
C16/116/Plus4: Notizen aus der Provinz
C64: Cycle, Mathematica, Deus Ex Machina
PC-Dos: Pager 11, Jizz/Stash, Sexadelic/Hyperventilation, Bakkslide7, 73 Million Seconds, Stars, Machines of Madness
PS2: Aura for Laura

Links to all videos via my channel

Thanks a lot,

My plan is to show one or two C64 productions and potentially something on some strange hardware, then focus on Amiga/060 demos, because thats where I feel comfortable. Then end with a couple of PC things just in case people haven't gotten the plot.

So what Amiga demos would you show? And maybe more importantly, except for the Factory demo, what PC demos?

I could have sworn that there was a similar thread here on a.d.a in the past.

I guess it depends on the target audience and on what you want to focus on.

On the technical side, Atrium from Loonies and TBC is considered as somewhat of a breakthrough in 4k coding so if you want to showcase that side of the scene, that might be worth considering. A research group in computer graphics seems an appropriate target audience for such things.

Also worth considering: Debris/Farbraush for the Wow element. Likewise for ASD's Lifeforce. Maybe Final Audition by Plastic.

btw, what happened to your Amiga, bonkers?

dodge: excellent choice amiga demowise but the audience will feel all depressed and sad after Bonkers lecture :o) (no less than two of those demos have suicide scenes and the rest isn't that much better). It definately needs a Tulou prod in between :o)

Thanks a lot,

Last time people were very interested in 4k's so will definitely show a couple of them. Still trying to make my mind up on the Amiga demos but there are some that I will definitely show,

Showbase Shape - C-Lous
Klone - DCS
Lux - EPH
Victoria - Nature&Traktor

On the PC side, I will show,

47'111.0 - Faktory
and one more, personally I think Farbrausch and ASD make terribly boring demos, PC is supposed to be about design and well Farbrauch aren't doing much of that and the terrible music in ASD's demos have always ruined them for me. Will have a look at stuff by Plastic.

Then I think I will show the Pokemini demo from BP05, quite liked that myself.

Will let you guys know when I have decided.

No need to worry about my Amiga, she is safe and sound, it's only that she has moved in with my parents for the time being. I am trying to finish up my PhD at the moment, so after BP I gave the computer to Esau to take it back to Sweden to try and remove a distraction from writing.

The demos i mentioned are not my favourite pc demos either, but they seem to be for a lot of people. In the end, it boils down to personal taste. Myself, i love stuff from Fairlight, Moppi, Kewlers, Bauknecht (above for example), Still and some others (wipe, stravaganza, neuro, equinox...).

@z5,

Something by Fairlight is probably a good idea, and as it is in the UK I should really promote our little scene as well =)

@dodge,

Spellbound is amazing, love all their demos, so might have to pick something from them. However, need to find a video. Anyone have a video of Ephidrenas Lux?

I making you a new video of Lux with less fcked up timing.

It is from the showing at a local demoscene pre-party (watch a lot of demos in some student cellar getting drunk before going out to normal bars afterwards :) ). Only the script has changed so I can put up that too so that people can patch their demos by replacing the script*.eph file.

Not the final version though :)

Slightly improved version for you. This was shown at a local demo-pre-party where the Trondheim sceners gather to have a beer and watch demos before going out in Trondheim.

video : http://www.pvv.org/~espenamo/eph-lux-v11.avi

You can patch your existing lux aeterna demo by replacing script3.eph in the directory with this one

script : http://www.pvv.org/~espenamo/script3.eph

Let me know if it works :)

replacing the script alone didn't work. Here is the total package that made the avi instead

@loady,

Thanks for the video.

I completely forgot about one demo, Killer-CNCD, which obviously needs to be shown. Does anyone have a decent capture of it?

@dodke ... of course you're right ... which in turn brings me to Beats by the very same group \o/ http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3448
that in fact brought back my attention to the demo scene in 2000 :)

@loady,

That is actually a massive difference between this version and the old comp version, the timing is much tighter, and I love the shadetable fades. Just made (IMO) one of the best demos even better. Great stuff.

Is the video of Lux recorded in UAE? It looks a lot faster compared to the compo version.

Unfortunately it is UAE. You can re-encode it at 10 fps for that right Amiga feeling :)
